Job Title: Program Coordinator for Land Programs
Report To: Camp Director/Assistant Director
Number of Positions Available: 1

Working as a member of the HOC coordinating team, the Program Coordinator for Land Program’s main role is to support and improve the effectiveness of all HOC Land programs(along with the Program Director) including Archery, Mountain Biking, Adventure Sports and Outdoor Adventure. This role is facilitated by establishing clear and concise goals for the program and supervising and evaluating teaching techniques. It also requires ongoing risk management assessment and equipment maintenance for all Land Programs. The coordinator also works closely with the Program Head to update program manuals, train and supervise activity staff in their roles and responsibilities and develop weekly staff schedules.

In addition, all coordinators must adhere to three general expectations;

Role Model in the Camp Community

  • Accept the responsibility to lead, motivate and evaluate staff in a positive environment.
  • Accept the responsibility to personally abide by and enforce camp policies.
  • Be a resource person for people with questions and concerns.

Supervisor and Evaluator of Camp Staff

  • During supervisory shifts, accept the responsibility as “person in charge” for the safety of both campers and staff.
  • Accept the shared responsibility in relieving a staff member of his/her duties should the need arise.
  • Accept the responsibility to supervise staff activities on assigned Saturday nights.
  • Accept the responsibility to train staff in your particular area on an ongoing basis.
  • Be responsible for supervising and evaluating staff members working in your program area or under your supervision.

As a Leader of the Camp Community

  • Participate fully in daytime and evening camp programs such as all-camps, campfires, family night and staff meetings etc.
  • Demonstrate a genuine compassion and care for both the professional and personal development of members of the camp community.
  • Make a personal commitment to your fellow Coordinators to communicate and assist each other to the best of your abilities.
  • Understand that your leadership role transcends beyond specific duty hours and outside of our camp community.

EMPLOYMENT PERIOD:

  • Staff Orientation / Training: TBD
  • Employment Period: July 1st, 2012 – August 25th, 2012

WAGES:

  • Summer wages range from $3,200 – $4,000 per summer depending on qualifications and experience of applicants. Room and board is included.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program with preferred study in recreation management, education, early childhood development, physical education or personnel management.
  • Administrative background with experience in supervising peers.
  • Experience working with children of varied ages in a supervisory or teaching situation. Specific camp experience an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, evaluate and deal effectively with problem solving situations within the area of responsibility.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Genuine interest in working with children in the community.
  • Minimum Bronze Cross Award.
  • Emergency First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Must be enthusiastic, energetic and positive person.
  • Must be willing to take part in camp related activities outside the defined job description.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reinforce the camp philosophy, policies and standards by acting as a role model to the staff and being an active participant in the camp community.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff and campers.
  • Accept responsibilities to maintain over-all camp timetable.
  • Improve the effectiveness of the HOC Land Programs by establishing clear and concise goals.
  • Ensure that proper equipment use and safety rules are followed by staff.
  • Ensure staff provides care to our campers that reflect the standards and guidelines of the Hockey Opportunity Camp Code of Conduct.
  • Create and execute camp programming that is age appropriate, productive, and fun.
  • Sign and abide by Hockey Opportunity Camp’s Privacy Policy.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Attend, facilitate and supervise May Skills Weekend.
  • Attend, organize and facilitate sessions and programming for Staff Orientation week in late June.
  • Participate in and take a leadership role in the training for land search and rescue procedures and assume leadership role during land emergency.
  • Supervise activity sign up at camper registration and enter activity selections into database.
  • Ensure activity schedules run on time with accurate head counts.
  • Responsible for coordinating & supervising, discipline problems, emergency situations, arrivals and departures of campers.
  • Facilitate Sunday night Program meeting with Program and Day Camp Coordinators.
  • Provide three formal evaluations; after weeks #2, #4 and #6.
  • Attend Monday morning coordinator meetings.
  • Assist with Saturday check out and Sunday camper registration.
  • Supervise Thursday computerized evaulation writing and ensure evaluations are reviewed and completed correctly.
  • Attend all and facilitate one Thursday evening staff meeting.
  • Ensure land program award allocations given to campers are accurate and enter awards into the database on a weekly basis.
  • Supervise camp and holdovers two Saturday Nights in the summer and coach’s corner on one night a week.
  • Facilitate a weekly meeting Sunday night for all program staff to talk about any necessary information for the upcoming week.
  • Make any transportation runs (ie. Clinic / hospital) that are required, provided that you are free at the time.
  • Complete coordinator report and update program manual at the end of the summer.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinators get one night per week and every other Saturday off. This is scheduled with the Camp Director at the beginning of the summer.

PROGRAM (LAND) DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITY:
Teaching

  • Provide on-going supervision of programs and teaching progression techniques through regular meetings and sitting in on classes.
  • Improve the effectiveness of class instruction through constant evaluation and holding regular teaching clinics to share effective and ineffective techniques.
  • Work with program heads and instructors regarding program preparation including lesson plans, teaching progression and program standards.

Risk Management

  • Implement effective procedure of actions regarding safety considerations./li>
  • Provide on-going evaluation of program sites and class safety.

Equipment

  • Responsible for maintaining equipment inventories and providing to Program Director
  • Incorporate on-going safety inspections.
  • Responsible for assigning and administering on-going program development tasks.
